A brand new paper just published has revealed a literal breakthrough in the treatment of sciatica. Dr Serafin Leeman and colleagues studies 148 patients with clinical sciatica over a 1 year period. The results of this landmark study were astounding. 81.8 to 90.5% of the patients suffering from sciatica reported clinically relevant improvements. The procedures used to get these incredible results are the exact procedures used in the Bedford Sciatica clinic. A large number of the patients reported clinically significant improvements within just 2 weeks after commencing the procedure. Not a single adverse event was reported following the procedure, this can not be said for medication, injections or surgery.
It is critical that sciatica is properly diagnosed or you are going to have a very difficult time to get rid of the problem. In most cases when you go to see a health care provider from a GP to a chiropractor or an osteopath they will diagnose your condition based on the symptoms that you present with. Then based on these symptoms they will “try” one therapeutic approach or another in order to get rid of the symptoms.
The problem with these typical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches is that they are not actually dealing with the true underlying cause of the sciatica. They are just trying to ease the symptoms without dealing with the real problem. This is what I like to call junk medicine. The usual orthopaedic tests that you are likely to receive have low specificity, accuracy and validity – in other words not a great deal of help when you need an accurate diagnosis of your condition.
If you are referred for some diagnostic tests these will often involve MRI scans but again we run into a serious diagnostic problem. The vast majority of MRI’s that people are referred to are conducted lying down and this means that there is no significant mechanical force in the spinal discs; so even if a herniated, prolapsed or bulging disc is detected on an MRI there is no accurate way to predict what happens to it when you are sitting or standing. Therefore, the lying down MRI you just had is virtually diagnostically useless!
There are 3 diagnostic tests that you should insist on when you have sciatica and need an accurate diagnosis of the cause:
1. Computer Analysed Global Postural Analysis (CAGPA) – This test is essential if the mechanical cause of the spinal disc problem is to be understood.
2. Static Electromyographic and Thermographic scans – These tests accurately pinpoint abnormal nerve function and lead to a much more specific solution for your sciatica. This is very important since there are several different nerve branches that can be causing your sciatica and without these tests finding the real problem is extremely hit and miss
3. Computer Analysed Digital X-Ray (CADXR) - These should be taken whilst standing or sitting so that the mechanical loads in the spinal discs can be accurately assessed. There is no more accurate way available today to analyse abnormal spinal loading and it’s effect of the spinal discs. With this test it is possible for a specialist to accurately re-construct the damaged area of your spine and allow you to make a full recovery.
If you are suffering with this painful and often debilitating spinal disease then you owe it to yourself to seek expert diagnosis and specialist care that will actually cure the sciatica instead of merely trying to relieve the symptoms temporarily.
